Does Facial Oil Really Fight Wrinkles?
A facial oil can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, redness, and pigmentation, but it cannot erase wrinkles, and I would be wary of any brand that tells you otherwise. The Facial Oil from Thomas Grove Skin is a blend of three organic oils: rosehip seed, neroli, and Bulgarian rose. I made it as an anti-aging, collagen-boosting treatment, and that is the promise I stand behind: skin that looks smoother, calmer, and more even, built from as few ingredients as possible.
What does it mean for a facial oil to fight wrinkles?
When people ask whether a facial oil fights wrinkles, they usually mean one of two things. Some hope it will remove lines that are already there. Others hope it will help skin look its best as it matures. Those are very different expectations, and mixing them up is where most disappointment starts.
At Thomas Grove Skin, I describe The Facial Oil in careful language on purpose. It is known to reduce the appearance of redness, fine lines and pigmentation. The word appearance matters. It tells you what you can expect to see in the mirror, and it leaves out what no bottle of oil can promise.
Here is how I think about the claims, laid out plainly:
|
Skin concern |
What Thomas Grove Skin says The Facial Oil does |
What we do not say |
|
Fine lines |
Known to reduce their appearance |
That it removes lines or replaces other care |
|
Redness |
Known to reduce its appearance |
That it cures any skin condition |
|
Pigmentation |
Known to reduce its appearance |
That it works overnight |
|
Collagen |
Described as a collagen-boosting treatment |
That it can reverse the passing of time |
A facial oil fights wrinkles in the sense that it supports the look of mature skin, and it does not fight them in the sense of making them vanish.
Why did I start Thomas Grove Skin with a facial oil?
I grew up on the coast in Carmel, not far from Big Sur. That landscape is where I first felt the healing power of plants, and I discovered natural ingredients for skincare and aromatherapy at a young age. I did not train in a lab. I am a self-taught chemist, and what drove me was a simple wish: to make a clean, effective skincare brand that still addressed the skin concerns people care about most.
I launched Thomas Grove Skin in 2020. The name comes from my father's first name and my mother's maiden name, so the brand carries my family in it. My first product, the one I chose to lead with, was The Facial Oil.
I picked a facial oil because it fit the way I like to work. The California lifestyle I grew up with is built on ease and simplicity, and I wanted skincare to feel the same way. I did not want a long routine or a long ingredient list. I wanted one product that could do real work.
I live in Southern California now with my husband and our twin daughters, Madeline and Hunter Ruby. The brand has grown since 2020, but the idea behind it has stayed put: efficacious, uncomplicated skincare.
What is actually in The Facial Oil?
The Facial Oil is made from sustainably sourced ingredients, and it contains three organic oils. Each one was selected for its own distinct qualities, and together they form the anti-aging treatment I described above.
|
Ingredient |
Role in The Facial Oil |
|
Rosehip Seed Oil |
One of the three organic oils in the blend |
|
Neroli Oil |
One of the three organic oils in the blend |
|
Bulgarian Rose Oil |
One of the three organic oils in the blend |
I have kept that table short because the formula is short. There is no hidden second page of ingredients. If you want to see the product for yourself, you can find The Facial Oil on its product page, and the full range is on the collection page.
If you would like to read more about why I chose an oil as the starting point, I wrote a separate piece on the Thomas Grove Skin journal called But Why a Facial Oil, You Ask.
Why do I use so few ingredients?
One of the three beliefs that guide Thomas Grove Skin is quality. I care about finding the world's best traceable, efficacious ingredients, and my rule of thumb is that less is more.
There is a practical side to that rule. When a formula has three ingredients, I know exactly what each one is doing and where it came from. When a customer asks me a question, I can answer it without needing a chart.
There is also a trust side. Skincare shelves are crowded, and it is easy to feel that more steps and more bottles must mean better results. I built Thomas Grove Skin on the opposite idea. A short formula made with care, and used consistently, is easier to understand and easier to judge for yourself.
A short ingredient list does not make a product better by itself, but it does make the product easier to trust.
Is a facial oil right for mature skin?
Mature skin is the center of what I do. Thomas Grove Skin offers thoughtful, effective skincare, especially for mature and challenged skin. My approach comes from a lifetime of market knowledge and from understanding what our customers feel is missing from their lives.
That is why The Facial Oil is built around a specific set of concerns: lines, redness and pigmentation. These are the things many of the women I hear from mention first. I did not set out to make a product for everyone. I set out to make something that delivers results for a specific customer, which is the third of our beliefs, knowledge.
If you have sensitive skin, my advice is to start gently. We offer The Facial Oil Sample, a small bottle of golden-colored skincare oil, so you can try it before committing to the full size. And if you have questions about whether it suits you, you can reach the team through the contact page.
Can a body oil help with firmness too?
Skin does not stop at the jawline, so I made a second product for the rest of the body. The Toning Body Oil is a fast-absorbing formula meant to hydrate, tone and revitalize. The idea behind it is summed up in three words on the product page: tone, hydrate, renew.
The Toning Body Oil is rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids and skin-renewing botanicals. It is designed to nourish and firm the skin and to support cell renewal while restoring a youthful glow. The warming botanicals in it gently stimulate circulation, which is part of how it works toward skin that looks firm, toned and luminous.
It is also handcrafted in small batches. I think of it as a sensorial ritual, something that makes an everyday moment feel a little more intentional.
Its ingredient list is longer than The Facial Oil's, because a body treatment has a different job:
|
Ingredient |
Notes |
|
Rose hip seed oil (Rosa canina L.) |
Shared with The Facial Oil |
|
Meadowfoam seed oil (Limnanthes alba) |
Plant oil base |
|
Camellia seed oil (Camellia oleifera) |
Plant oil base |
|
Neroli oil (Citrus aurantium var. amara L.) |
Shared with The Facial Oil |
|
Bergamot (Citrus aurantium var. bergamia) |
Citrus botanical |
|
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfad.) |
Citrus botanical |
|
Bulgarian rose otto essential oil (Rosa damascena Mill.) |
Shared with The Facial Oil |
|
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) |
Organic, warming botanical |
|
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Blanco Benth) |
Organic |
Three of these, rose hip seed, neroli and Bulgarian rose, are the same family of oils that make up The Facial Oil. That overlap is intentional, and it means the face and body products share a common thread.
How do I use the Toning Body Oil step by step?
The directions for the Toning Body Oil are simple, and I would rather keep them that way. Here is the routine as it appears on the product page:
-
Shake the bottle gently before use.
-
Dispense the oil into your palms.
-
Massage it onto your skin. It works on damp or dry skin, so use whichever suits your day.
-
Repeat daily for toned, hydrated and radiant skin.
-
If you want a soak, add some of the oil to your bath water.
Daily use is the point. Skin that looks better over time usually has a steady routine behind it, and oils fit that rhythm well because the routine takes only a minute.
How can I build a simple routine around the facial oil?
A routine does not need to be complicated to be worth keeping. This is how I suggest approaching the Thomas Grove Skin range if you are new to it:
|
Step |
What to do |
Where to find it |
|
1. Try |
Start with a small bottle so you can get to know the oil |
|
|
2. Commit |
Move to the full size once you are comfortable |
|
|
3. Extend |
Add care for the body |
|
|
4. Pair |
Choose the face and body products together |
If you enjoy a touch of ritual, the range also includes the Restorative Skin Smoothing Stone, which is also sold as a set with The Facial Oil. For gifting, there is a Deluxe Holiday Bundle and a cosmetic bag created with Casey Hill Studio.
What are the honest limits of a facial oil?
I want to be direct about this, because it is the part most brands skip. A facial oil is a skincare product. It is not a medical procedure, and it works best as part of a consistent routine rather than as a quick fix.
Here is what I would tell a friend who asked me across a table:
-
The Facial Oil is made to reduce the appearance of fine lines, redness and pigmentation. It is not made to remove them.
-
Results come from regular use, so a single application is not the test.
-
Every skin is different, which is why we offer a sample size.
-
Questions are welcome. We reply to customer inquiries within 48 hours on business days, though sale and peak periods can take longer.
The most useful thing a brand can do is tell you what its product is for, and also what it is not for.
